As spring reaches the fort, Quince and Major Daggett face the familiar challenge of “winter soldiers”—men who enlisted for shelter and provisions during the cold months, only to be tempted by the western gold fields when travel opens again. Quince leads the Clearwater Patrol into Cheyenne country as tensions mount along a wagon-train route.
