The story behind Tenjin
This is a continuation of yesterday’s story.
Why is Sugawara no Michizane called Tenjin?
At that time, Michizane was very talented
and got promoted quickly (as a politician).
However, other nobilities came to resent him,
and even though he was innocent, he was arrested.
After Michizane died, disasters such as lightning
became more frequent in that area.
The government feared that the dead Michizane was angry,
so in order to calm his anger, they began to enshrine him as Tenjin.
