The God of Learning in Japan
Yesterday, I talked about Kameido Tenjin,
and in Japan there are many shrines
called XX Tenjin or XX Tenmangu.
All of these shrines enshrine a god of learning
named Sugawara no Michizane.
Sugawara no Michizane was a famous person
from the Heian period, and he always appears
in Japanese history textbooks.
Because he was such an outstanding scholar and poet,
he is called the god of learning.
