If you have a feeling that your husband is lying, and giving you versions of stories aren’t the whole truth, you’re probably wrestling with a quiet ache that is becoming impossible to ignore.
After interviewing over 200 women who discovered that their husbands had been lying about affairs, double lives, and addictions for years, almost all of them said that they wished they’d had “help getting to clarity about what was really going on sooner.”
IF YOU THINK YOUR HUSBAND IS LYING, LOOK FOR PATTERNSThe women I interviewed on the Betrayal Trauma Recovery Podcast described the same unmistakable patterns:
1. ODD PAUSES IN CONVERSATIONSIf you’ve ever asked a seemingly simple question about his schedule or who he was texting and it’s followed by a blank look, a delayed answer, a strange shift in his tone, or a question about your intentions, pay attention.
If your husband is lying, it’s likely he’s using these tactics to buy some time for choosing the details to share that will be just enough to keep the truth hidden from you.
2. THE “YOU’RE OVERREACTING” DEFLECTIONIt’s not unreasonable to ask clarifying questions when conversations are confusing, but if your husband is lying it’s likely that he’ll redirect the focus onto your tone, timing, or memory so you’ll stop questioning any inconsistencies in his stories.
3. HE MAINTAINS A POLISHED IMAGEMany women who discovered that their husband was lying also noted that he was charming and respected in their community, which made it even more difficult for her to get clarity.
His “great guy” public image left most women feeling more isolated than the lying itself, because they knew it would be hard for people to believe he would lie to her.
FINDING CLARITY WHEN YOU THINK YOUR HUSBAND IS LYINGIf your husband is lying, he’s most likely consistently creating moments of confusion to keep you off balance and doubting. That doubt isn’t a flaw…it’s a signal. Before you engage in one more circular conversation, or a couple therapy session that leaves you doubting yourself even more, try this:
My Clarity After Betrayal Workshop ($27) gives women the exact tools they need to find clarity, fast.
It helps you:
Without knowing these things, it’s common for the pattern of lies and confusion to continue even inside couple therapy or programs designed to help him be more honest.
TRANSCRIPT: I THINK NY HUSBAND IS LYING TO MEAnne: I have a member of our community on today’s episode. We’ll call her Stacey. Welcome, Stacy.
Stacey: Thank you. It’s great to be here.
Anne: Did you recognize your husband’s behaviors as abuse when you began your relationship with him?
Stacey: No, not at all. You were the first one that made me ever consider it abusive, just from listening to your podcasts. Before that, it had never even crossed my mind
Anne: Let’s start with that. What types of behaviors were you experiencing that led you to want some help? What made you think,”My husband is lying to me?”
Stacey: Well, he had an affair. About five years after the affair, things weren’t moving forward. I couldn’t figure out why. And that is the first time I heard the term gaslighting. And that’s when I started to search more for answers. I realized the extent of what had happened, and how I had been emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually abused, I mean everything he said was practically an example of emotional abuse. Just the extreme gaslighting that had gone on and was still going on.
Anne: Learning how abusers gaslight can help figure out what’s going on. Had that gaslighting and manipulation happened throughout your whole marriage? Once you knew what you were looking at and looked back, did you recognize it had been happening the whole time?
Stacey: For sure. I discovered he was looking at online explicit material just about a month after we married. And I think that’s when I knew I didn’t marry who I thought I had. But I felt stuck, because the next day after I found out he was looking at it, I found out I was pregnant. And that’s when I just thought, there’s nothing I can do, I’m stuck.
