スタバのロゴの由来から健康について考えた

Just a one-minute English speech by Thinking Fox.

When it comes to famous coffee chains, the first one for most people is probably Starbucks.

We see the Starbucks logo all over the city, and we know at a glance that it's a Starbucks.

But can you actually remember the details of the design?

It's a long-haired woman on a green background, and she looks like a mermaid because she is holding her two tails on both sides.

Do you know what this logo is based on and why Starbucks chose it as its symbol?

Apparently, it's a siren — known as "Seiren" in Japanese — a creature from Greek myth who sang enchanting songs at sea to attract sailors.

Starbucks chose it as its symbol because they wanted their coffee to be as tempting as the siren's song.

What a witty idea it is!

By the way, as everyone knows, the sirens in Greek myth had a dark side.

Sailors would become so absorbed in the song that they stopped watching where they were going.

As a result, their ships would crash into the rocks before they knew it.

It can be dangerous to get too absorbed in a song.

Similarly, coffee itself tastes good and can help you relax, but excessive intake can lead to health problems like arrhythmia or an upset stomach.

So in that sense, I think this logo is fitting in many ways.

有名なコーヒーチェーンといえば、多くの人にとって最初に浮かぶのはおそらくスターバックスでしょう。

街中のいたるところでスターバックスのロゴを見かけ、ひと目でスターバックスだとわかります。

でも、そのデザインの細部を本当に覚えていますか。

緑の背景に長い髪の女性が描かれていて、両側に2本の尾ひれを持っているので人魚のように見えます。

このロゴが何を元にしているのか、そしてなぜスターバックスがそれをシンボルに選んだのか、ご存じでしょうか。

どうやらそれはサイレン、日本語では「セイレーン」と呼ばれる、ギリシャ神話に登場する生き物で、海で魅惑的な歌を歌って船乗りたちを惹きつけていたそうです。

スターバックスは、自分たちのコーヒーをセイレーンの歌のように魅力的なものにしたいと考え、それをシンボルに選びました。

なんて気の利いたアイデアでしょう！

ところで、誰もが知っているように、ギリシャ神話のセイレーンには暗い一面がありました。

船乗りたちは歌にすっかり夢中になり、進む先を見なくなってしまいました。

その結果、気づいたときには船が岩に激突していたのです。

歌に夢中になりすぎるのは危険なこともあります。

同じように、コーヒーはそれ自体おいしく、リラックスにも役立ちますが、摂りすぎると不整脈や胃の不調といった健康上の問題につながることがあります。

そういう意味で、このロゴはいろいろな意味でぴったりだと思います。
