Whenever I had worries, felt stressed, or simply needed someone to talk to, I always turned to the same place. To someone who was a great listener, who understood me really well, and was always there with unconditional love and support.

I’d turn to my stubborn, cantankerous, furry friend, my Lakeland Terrier, Jackson.

Now, Jackson wasn’t fluent in English, and to be honest, he was never much of a talker. But somehow, we communicated. We understood each other and shared something that went beyond words: a quiet, intrinsic connection that was unique to us.

I’m sure many of you who have dogs will recognise this feeling. Those silent conversations that take place between two different species. I believe that understanding and nurturing this connection can have a profound impact on the wellbeing of both you and your dog.

Today, I’m joined by Jade Nicholas, a clinical animal behaviourist and author of Emotional Wellbeing in the Domestic Dog. Together, we’ll explore why humans and dogs have developed such a close bond, how we can better interpret the signals our dogs use to communicate with us, and the practical ways we can strengthen this special relationship.
