On April 26, 1999, BBC presenter and Crimewatch host Jill Dando was shot outside her Fulham home in one of Britain’s most notorious unsolved murders. Police investigated thousands of leads before arresting local man Barry George, who was convicted in 2001. But questions surrounding a microscopic particle of firearm residue eventually helped overturn his conviction, and George was acquitted at a retrial in 2008.
Now, 27 years after Jill’s murder, the Metropolitan Police are revisiting a mysterious piece of evidence. Advances in CCTV enhancement technology have allowed investigators to re-examine footage of an unidentified “Man X” seen near Putney Bridge shortly after the shooting.
Who killed Jill Dando? This episode reconstructs her final morning, the investigation, Barry George’s overturned conviction, the Serbian assassination theory and the mysterious figure police are examining again in 2026.
