The 2007 murder of 26-year-old Chiara Poggi in Garlasco became one of Italy's most controversial criminal cases. Her boyfriend, Alberto Stasi, discovered her body inside her family's villa and was eventually convicted of her murder, receiving a 16-year prison sentence that became final in 2015.

Nearly two decades later, the case has exploded back into the headlines. Italian prosecutors are now investigating Andrea Sempio, a longtime friend of Chiara's brother, after renewed analysis of DNA found beneath Chiara's fingernails was considered compatible with Sempio's paternal genetic line. Investigators are also reexamining other forensic evidence from the original crime scene. Sempio denies involvement, while Chiara's family continues to support Stasi's conviction. Now Italy faces an extraordinary question: what does the new evidence actually mean?
