Ten-year-old Lily Peters disappeared while riding her bicycle home from her aunt’s house in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, on April 24, 2022. Her bicycle was discovered near a wooded trail, and Lily’s body was found the following morning.

Police soon arrested her 14-year-old cousin, Carson Peters-Berger. According to the criminal complaint, he admitted deliberately leading Lily into the woods and intending to kill and sexually assault her. His attorneys spent years trying to transfer the case into Wisconsin’s juvenile justice system, citing autism, developmental limitations and mental-health needs, but courts kept the prosecution in adult court.
