Does turning the other cheek mean a Christian wife should tolerate hurtful behavior, stay quiet, or avoid setting boundaries in her marriage?

A listener recently asked me this after hearing an episode about Christian boundaries. It’s an important question because many Christian women have learned to connect being loving, forgiving, and Christlike with keeping the peace—even when that means ignoring what is actually happening.

But what if turning the other cheek and setting a boundary aren't opposites at all?

In this episode of The Worthy Wife Podcast, we look at what Jesus modeled when He faced criticism, demands, conflict, and opposition. Sometimes He answered. Sometimes He confronted. Sometimes He remained silent. And sometimes He simply walked away.

We’ll talk about Proverbs 15:1 and 1 Peter 3:9 and consider what it means to respond without retaliation while still having clear boundaries.

You'll learn why a boundary isn't about controlling your husband's behavior. It's about deciding how you will respond to his behavior.

We’ll also explore the difference between being a peacemaker and a peacekeeper, why gentleness doesn't make you responsible for someone else's anger, and why you don't have to defend yourself against every accusation.

And I want you to consider one uncomfortable question:

When you ask, “But aren't I supposed to turn the other cheek?” are you genuinely asking how Jesus wants you to respond—or are you looking for biblical permission to keep doing what you have done all along: staying quiet, avoiding his displeasure, and calling it love?

Turning the other cheek doesn't mean:

You may do whatever you want to me.

It can mean:

What you do doesn't get to decide who I become next.

If you're a Christian wife who is walking on eggshells, struggling with guilt around boundaries, afraid of your husband's disapproval, or unsure where loving him ends and taking responsibility for his emotions begins, this episode is for you.

If you're ready to stop walking on eggshells and want help sorting out what belongs to you, what doesn't, and how you want to show up in your marriage, I work privately with Christian women through high-touch coaching.
