Peter Gay’s work is used here to frame the Enlightenment as openly anti-Christian a project to “erase the shame” of Christianity by replacing it with deism (God as distant watchmaker), then hardening that exile of God through Kant’s autonomous reason (reason as judge over everything). From there, Hegel “brings God back” only by redefining God as the historical process with the state as “the march of God in the world,” which seeds modern statism and the dream of a unified order. Rousseau adds the “general will” (democratic consensus as a kind of revelation), Nietzsche pushes the logic “beyond good and evil” (useful “fictions” over truth), and Marx turns salvation into revolutionary activism, requiring a scapegoat class to embody society’s “evil.” Darwin then removes even the deist watchmaker, and Comte/Freud/Dewey help recast morality, guilt, and law as scientific/therapeutic/positivist categories leaving the church boxed into an “inner spirituality” that eventually gets invaded by psychology. The closing call is explicitly biblical: new birth (John 3:3), God’s building (Psalm 127:1), and Christ’s kingship over the nations (Psalm 2) as the only real counter to a modern project that seeks a new “incarnation” in the world-state.
