Is the purpose of life simply to minimize costs and maximize happiness? In this episode, I reflect on the popularity of “small happiness” lifestyles: cheap meals, quiet weekends, modest homes, and few ambitions. There is nothing wrong with living simply, but reducing desire also reduces the risk of failure, disappointment, and pain. Drawing on Nietzsche’s idea of the “last man,” I ask whether happiness alone is enough. Perhaps some of the most meaningful things in life—art, love, adventure, creation, and self-overcoming—are inefficient, risky, and costly. Maybe the deeper question is what we are willing to live for.
