In 1972, nineteen-year-old Jody Loomis was tragically attacked and murdered while bicycling toward a stable in Washington state. The investigation stalled for decades until a cold case detective discovered a tiny trace of DNA on a pair of borrowed boots the victim was wearing. Utilizing advanced genetic genealogy, authorities ultimately linked the genetic material to Terrence Miller, a local resident with a background of sexual offenses. Although Miller died by suicide as jurors deliberated his fate in 2020, the court subsequently affirmed his guilty verdict, finally granting a measure of closure to the victim's family.
