A decades-long Washington state cold case was finally solved when Detective Susan Logothetti used an undercover chewing gum ruse to obtain a fresh DNA sample from a violent offender named Mitchell Gaff. Disguised as energy gum marketers, law enforcement successfully tricked the suspect into spitting out the gum, which matched biological evidence linked to the brutal 1984 murder of Judy Weaver. Subsequent testing also tied Gaff to the previously unsolved 1980 homicide of Susan Vesey, as well as other horrific sexual assaults. Despite attempting to downplay his actions by claiming he rehabilitated through Buddhism, Gaff ultimately pleaded guilty to the murders. Consequently, a judge sentenced the predatory criminal to 50 years in prison, ensuring he will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
