What if one of the reasons you keep going back to porn has nothing to do with sex and everything to do with your inability to simply be present?
After reading The Molecule of More and recently sitting down with co-author Dr. Daniel Z. Lieberman, Frank has been rethinking the role dopamine plays in porn addiction and recovery.
Dopamine isn't the enemy. It's deeply involved in motivation, anticipation, learning, and the pursuit of rewards. But porn can exploit that pursuit by offering an endless stream of novelty: another image, another video, another search, another hit.
Always something more.
And over time, that pattern may extend far beyond porn.
We reach for our phones when we're bored. Fill silence with podcasts and music. Distract ourselves when we're uncomfortable. Think about work while we're with our families. And even after quitting porn, we can become obsessed with the future:
When will the urges stop? When will my brain recover? When will I feel normal? When will I finally be free?
In this episode of The Rebuilt Man, Frank explores why learning to stay in the present moment may be an overlooked part of recovery and why freedom isn't about eliminating every uncomfortable feeling or sexual urge. It's about becoming a man who can experience those things without needing to escape them.
Frank breaks down 7 practical ways to train presence:
Practice gratitude and appreciate what you already have
Use intentional breathing to create space between feeling and action
Have technology-free conversations with the people you love
Use appropriate physical discomfort to practice staying instead of escaping
Spend intentional time in silence without constant stimulation
Walk without your phone, music, podcasts, or other input
Learn to experience an urge without automatically obeying it
You'll also learn why quitting porn can sometimes become another form of future-focused pursuit, how constant stimulation affects your ability to be present with your wife and children, and why recovery has to become about more than counting days.
Because the goal isn't to become a man who's really good at avoiding porn.
It's to become a man who no longer needs porn to escape his life.
Porn taught you to constantly ask:
"What's next?"
Freedom teaches you to ask:
"What's here?"
Porn taught you to chase. Recovery has to teach you to stay.
