SHAKEUP: Islanders Transition Matthew Schaefer to Right Side—Can This CHANGE Their Season?

The New York Islanders shake up defensive pairings as Matthew Schaefer practices on the right side—could this gamble reshape the season's outlook? Head coach Peter DeBoer experiments to ease the crowded left defense, while also introducing long-overdue changes to the team's stagnant power play. With Adam Pelech, Alexander Romanov, and Isaiah George in the mix, competition intensifies for roster spots and top-pairing duties.

Gil Martin breaks down how DeBoer’s insistence on increased movement and interchangeable roles could finally boost the Islanders’ power play, which ranked 30th in the NHL last year. The discussion covers questions about ownership—are Ledecky and Malkin to blame for the team’s recent struggles?—as well as the outlook for prospects like Kashawn Aitcheson and Malte Gustafsson. Plus, a look back at former defenseman Gord Dineen’s contributions in honor of his birthday. Can the Islanders’ bold adjustments ignite a playoff resurgence?
