In this episode of A Changed Mind, David Bayer makes the case that the most important skill you can develop right now is not learning more, it is learning how to decide for yourself what is actually true.
He starts with a gap in how all of us were educated. Most people spend 12 to 20 years becoming educated, and almost none of it addresses the questions that determine the quality of a life. Who am I. Where do my beliefs come from. How does reality actually work. You can meet someone with two master's degrees and a PhD who has never investigated why they believe what they believe, or where their definition of success came from. David traces the arc most people follow, school, career, company, house, and the moment around 35 or 45 when they look around and ask, is this it. Those were the exact questions that started his own journey.
The core argument: you were not born believing what you believe. You absorbed it from parents, school, culture, religion, and now algorithms, and there is nothing wrong with that, since nobody can verify everything independently. The problem is that borrowed information quietly becomes borrowed belief, and you stop recognizing it was ever given to you. Outsource your beliefs and you outsource your reality.
David then draws on a Yuval Noah Harari keynote about why fiction has a structural advantage over truth: truth is complicated, truth is expensive in effort, and fiction can be manufactured almost infinitely. He extends it with the harder half, that the truth inside us is the one we avoid, and speaks from his own recovery, the failed business, the blackouts, and how much easier it was to keep telling himself a story about just partying on the weekends. He closes practical, with a belief audit you can run on any area of your life, and a line that matters coming from someone who teaches this material: stop confusing authority with truth, including his own.
