Key points worth noting:

1755 Lisbon earthquake: One of the most devastating in European history (estimated 8.5–9.0 magnitude). It destroyed much of Lisbon, triggered a massive tsunami, and caused fires. It influenced philosophy (e.g., Voltaire) and early seismology.
Modern risks: The area still faces significant threat. The Gorringe Bank and other offshore faults can produce large events. Portugal has improved building codes since the 20th century, but older structures remain vulnerable.
Recent activity: Smaller quakes happen regularly, especially in the Azores. For example, there have been notable swarms and moderate events in recent years.
