SURPRISE: Two Key Figures Must EMERGE for BYU Football’s Passing Attack & Offense to Truly Thrive | Grading BYU's Offense

BYU football has cruised into their bye week at 3-0, raising hopes for a Big 12 Conference breakthrough as Bear Bachmeier commands the offense with precision and LJ Martin shreds defenses on the ground. With offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick pushing for even higher efficiency, can the Cougars' multifaceted attack withstand tougher Power Four opponents and keep their College Football Playoff dream alive?

Jake Hatch grades every facet of BYU’s offense, beginning with Bachmeier’s exceptional 71% completion rate and 6:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio that put him squarely in the conversation for conference honors. He spotlights LJ Martin—the “backbone” of the attack—powering through defenses at nearly 8 yards per carry and shouldering the run game since Sione Moa went down. But as the Cougars eye a sustained campaign, the emergence of potential sidekicks like Preston Rex and the electrifying versatility of Journee Tonga and Devaughn Eka become crucial to maintaining a fresh, dangerous rushing rotation.

The receiving corps is more balanced than in previous years, with Legend Glasker stunning as a freshman and making his case for a 1,000-yard season. Questions linger about whether tight ends Roger Saleapaga and Walker Lyons—so highly touted in camp—will become greater focal points in the aerial attack as the schedule toughens and depth is tested. Jake Hatch breaks down why spreading the ball beyond top playmakers like Glasker and Kyler Kasper could be the key to unpredictable, playoff-caliber offense.

Offensive line play earns a rare A+, with Bruce Mitchell and the breakout of Paki Finau anchoring a unit that’s paved the way for nearly 7 yards per carry—one of the nation’s elite marks. The discussion unpacks how line depth, TJ Woods' coaching, and a continuous legacy of standout left tackles could be the difference once BYU faces powerhouse defenses. With approaching clashes versus TCU, Notre Dame, Arizona State, and Utah, Jake Hatch asks whether BYU can avoid a post-bye letdown, keep their offensive juggernaut humming, and exceed preseason projections on the march to playoff relevance.

Is this potent offense built to last, or will BYU’s early promise face a reality check as Big 12 play heats up?
