You're at the checkout, almost done, and your child grabs something and asks, "Can we get this?" And four words come out before you've even thought about them: "We can't afford it." It feels honest. Responsible, even. Like you're teaching them the value of money. Most of us say it without a second thought, because our parents said it to us.

But that little phrase can quietly plant something much bigger. A child doesn't hear a temporary cash-flow issue. They hear there is not enough; we are not people who get to have things; wanting is a problem. And they build a whole worldview on top of it. In this episode, I share the scarcity belief I'm still unraveling in my fifties, why the ask is almost never really about the toy, and the exact words to use instead that still mean no without teaching lack.
