Kaziranga's 10KM buffer was never permanent - so why is everyone angry about 1KM?

In this episode, we break down the viral Kaziranga Eco-Sensitive Zone controversy based on Deccan Herald and The Better India reports.

On 8th August, the Assam government announced it will notify a 1KM ESZ around Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, instead of the Supreme Court's default 10KM buffer. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma says the 10KM default exists only because Kaziranga's ESZ was never formally notified, and a 10KM zone would swallow entire towns like Kaliabor, Bokakhat, Jakhalabandha and even force Numaligarh Refinery to shut.

Locals protested from Kuthari to Bagori demanding 1KM for livelihoods, while Congress and environmentalists warn it will legalize mining and increase human-elephant and human-tiger conflict.

But the real story is deeper than the number. Despite the SC's 2019 ban on construction in 9 animal corridors and mining in Karbi Anglong catchments, violations continue - school in Haldhibari corridor, construction in Panbari, sand mining in Deihori river.

The question is not just radius, it's connectivity. Rhinos don't understand administrative boundaries.
