Xenotransplantation(異種移植) means transplanting organs from animals into humans, unlike conventional human-to-human transplantation. This article reports a case of a patient who underwent a pig-to-human kidney xenotransplant. For the first six months, rejection remained under control, but once an infection developed and immunosuppressive therapy(免疫抑制療法) had to be tapered, it became difficult to maintain graft(移植片) function.Apparently, microthrombosis(微小血栓) had developed in the capillaries(微小血管).Nevertheless, this case suggests that pig kidney xenotransplantation can serve as a bridge to allotransplantation(同種移植) until a suitable human donor becomes available.
Given the current shortage of human donors, these advances are highly significant. On the other hand, when it comes to the lung, the barriers to xenotransplantation are said to be much greater. So I hope further progress will be made in this field.
