وُلِدَت نوال السعداوي في السابع والعشرين منأكتوبر عام ألفٍ وتسعمائةٍ وواحدٍ وثلاثين في قرية كفر طحلة بمحافظة القليوبية فيمصر. وكانت طبيبةً وكاتبةً وروائيةً مصرية، عُرفت بدفاعها عن حقوق الإنسان، وخاصةًحقوق المرأة. نشأت في أسرةٍ محافظة، وكانت الطفلة الثانية بين تسعة أبناء. وعندماكانت في السادسة من عمرها خضعت لعملية ختان، وهي تجربة تركت أثراً عميقاً فيحياتها، ودعتها لاحقاً إلى معارضة هذه الممارسة والدعوة إلى إنهائها.

درست الطب في جامعة القاهرة، وتخرّجت عام ألفٍوتسعمائةٍ وخمسةٍ وخمسين، ثم عملت طبيبةً في عددٍ من المستشفيات. وخلال عملهالاحظت المشكلات الصحية والنفسية التي كانت تعاني منها كثيرٌ من النساء، ورأت أنالتمييز الاجتماعي والعنف ضد المرأة كانا من أهم أسباب هذه المعاناة.

بدأت نوال الكتابة في سنٍ مبكرة، وأصدرت عشراتالكتب والروايات والدراسات. ومن أشهر مؤلفاتها مذكرات طبيبة، وامرأة عندنقطة الصفر، والمرأة والجنس.وقد أثارت بعض كتبها جدلاً واسعاً، لأنها تناولتقضايا المرأة والدين والمجتمع بصراحة، وانتقدت كثيراً من العادات والتقاليدالسائدة.

في عام ألفٍ وتسعمائةٍ واثنين وسبعين نُشر كتابهاالمرأة والجنس، وأدى ذلك إلى إقالتها من منصبها في وزارة الصحة. وفي عامألفٍ وتسعمائةٍ وواحدٍ وثمانين سُجنت مدةً قصيرة في عهد الرئيس محمد أنور الساداتبسبب مواقفها السياسية، ثم أطلقت السلطات سراحها بعد اغتياله.

واجهت نوال السعداوي خلال حياتها انتقاداتٍشديدة، كما رُفعت ضدها دعاوى قضائية، وتلقت تهديدات بسبب آرائها، مما دفعها إلىالإقامة خارج مصر عدة سنوات. وخلال تلك الفترة عملت أستاذةً زائرة في عددٍ منالجامعات، منها جامعة ديوك وجامعات أخرى في الولايات المتحدة.

اشتهرت نوال السعداوي بمعارضتها لختان الإناث،ودفاعها عن المساواة بين المرأة والرجل، كما عبّرت عن آراءٍ مثيرةٍ للجدل في قضاياالدين والمجتمع، وهو ما جعلها شخصيةً مؤثرةً ومحلَّ نقاشٍ واسع في العالم العربيوخارجه.

توفيت نوال السعداوي في الحادي والعشرين من مارسعام ألفين وواحدٍ وعشرين عن عمرٍ ناهز تسعين عاماً. وما زالت كتبها وأفكارها تُقرأوتناقش حتى اليوم، ويعدّها كثيرون من أبرز الكاتبات والمفكرات في العالم العربي
