1 Deconstructing the Educational and Physical Standards of CDS II 2026

Hey! I'd love to hear your thoughts, send me a voice note.

Applying for a commission in the armed forces is a rigorous journey that begins with a highly disciplined registration process. A single discrepancy in your official registration or identity documents can end your candidacy before you ever set foot in the testing hall. This episode explores the structural rules of the UPSC Combined Defence Services Examination (II), 2026.

The registration process requires candidates to create a lifetime Universal Registration Number that remains constant across all of the Commission's examinations. During the examination, candidates are required to use a black ball point pen only for writing and marking answers on scannable OMR sheets, as any other color or pencil is strictly prohibited. Beyond academic requirements, the entry gates enforce a strict policy on electronic devices and close entry exactly thirty minutes before each session begins. The final selection ranks candidates based on the combined marks of their written papers and their performance in the holistic SSB tests.

• The written papers carry a maximum of 300 marks for IMA, INA, and AFA, while the OTA course is evaluated out of 200 marks.
• Specific age windows are strictly enforced across academies, requiring candidates to be between 19 and 24 years of age for IMA and INA.
• Educational qualifications differ by branch, with engineering degrees or specific physics and math backgrounds required for the Naval and Air Force Academies.
• The Services Selection Board selection features a first-day screening test consisting of Officer Intelligence Rating and Picture Perception tasks.
• Aggregate score ties are systematically resolved by prioritizing written exam totals, followed by General Knowledge marks, and finally candidate age seniority.

National Cadet Corps 'C' Certificate holders enjoy reserved vacancies in the IMA, INA, and AFA, but must compete as general candidates without reservations if they apply for the Short Service Commission at OTA.

With no option to correct or withdraw an application once submitted, are you taking the necessary precautions to verify every detail of your URN profile and academic credentials?
