On a fog-bound November evening, Clara Merton seeks help after a death that no one considers unusual: her elderly father has died in St. Bartholomew’s Union Workhouse, officially from heart failure, but two days earlier he had taken her hand and warned her that if they said he died in his sleep, she must not believe them.
Inside the workhouse, the investigation uncovers spotless floors, locked doors, frightened inmates, and an institution determined to treat death as routine. Edwin Merton’s few possessions have disappeared. A strange mark circles his wrist. An elderly attendant runs at the first sign of questioning, while every trail leads toward an abandoned underground chamber known only as the River Room.
This is a darker and more humane Nocturnal Tales mystery — a story of poverty, obedience, and the terrible things that can happen when everyone follows the rules and no one accepts responsibility.
ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS This is a complete original mystery written by Dora Laverty for Nocturnal Tales. The story is followed by a short historical epilogue examining the real English workhouse system and the fear it inspired.
