Dublin, September 1929. Leaves just beginning to turn along Waterloo Road, and a quiet morning at Merrion Square interrupted by a housekeeper holding a folded paper a little too tightly.

A diamond crescent has disappeared from a widow's dressing table, and the new parlourmaid — nineteen, three weeks out of work before she found the place — was alone in the bedroom on Friday afternoon.

She was engaged on the strength of a glowing character reference. It praises her honesty, her discretion and her careful handling of valuables. It is written in a very good imitation of Anne Foster's handwriting — and Anne Foster has never met her.

This time the case is Anne's from the first morning. Captain Arthur arrives a little later, and discovers that the most useful thing he can do is follow her lead — and fetch the sandwiches.

The Letter Anne Never Wrote is an original Golden Age-style mystery about reputations: the ones we borrow, the ones we lend, and the ones a household can take away without ever calling the police.
