A thunderstorm over Manhattan, bread lines in the streets below, and Arthur and the Belgian Detective — a long way from a damp English autumn — invited to dinner forty floors above Fifth Avenue.

Their host is Silas V. Renshaw, a financier who has lost twenty-two million dollars since the Crash and can now afford only three motorcars, twelve servants and an entire floor of the Marwick Tower. Around his table: his daughter, her former fiancé, a senator with a cigar large enough to require planning permission, a widow whose diamonds survived the Depression better than the banks, his physician, and his colourless business partner.

Over coffee, Renshaw makes an announcement. Someone at this table helped arrange his losses. He knows who. And at nine o'clock tomorrow morning, certain documents will be delivered that will destroy one person in the room.

Then he steps out onto the terrace, alone, into the storm. The doors are locked behind him. The lights go out.

Twenty seconds later, Silas Renshaw is lying beside the balustrade with a wound in his chest — on a terrace with no roof above, no ledge, no fire escape, forty floors over the street, and nobody out there with him.

ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is an original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers — but the plot, characters and text are entirely our own creation.
