Constantinople at sunset, 1925. The domes and minarets stand black against a copper sky, gulls scream over the Galata waterfront, and Arthur and the Belgian Detective are aboard the Caledonia, a British steamer bound for Piraeus and home, after a delicate matter involving a French diplomat, a missing emerald and a Bulgarian gentleman.

Among the passengers is Mrs Lavinia Cartwright: seventy, upright, dressed in black, carrying a silver-topped cane she does not appear to need, and already at war with her cabin, the steward, the coffee and the decline of the British Empire.

As the last passengers come aboard, her cane strikes the deck. She has gone white. A tall, grey-haired man with a slight stiffness in his left leg has just walked up the gangway, and she knows his face.

"That man is dead," she says. "I saw him murdered. Fifteen years ago."

Through an uncurtained window in Pembridge Gardens, in 1910, she watched two men fight and one fall. She fetched a policeman. When they returned, the house was empty: no body, no blood, nothing. Now the dead man is booked into Cabin 24 under another name. And by the following morning, Mrs Cartwright's cane is lying beside an overturned deck chair, and her shawl is hanging from the rail.
