London, the last night of October. Rain on the pavement, a dinner in Bloomsbury that ran far too late, and an umbrella that turns inside out at the first gust.

Across a narrow street, one café is still lit after closing time. Tonight is its last night — a handwritten notice on the door says so. But the woman who draws back the bolt recognises Arthur at once, and she has been hoping he would come.

Inside, the chairs are upside down on every table but one. That table, by the front window, has been laid for two. It is laid like this every year, on this same night, at the request of a note signed with the name of her husband — who was found in the river twelve years ago. Arthur was the last witness to see him walk out of this room alive.

Now she has a question for him, and she needs the answer before midnight: which of the two men really left this room?

The Belgian Detective has an hour, a pot of coffee, a dark window and a memory that has been trusted for twelve years. The gentleman who reserved the table is expected at the stroke of twelve.

ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS
This is an original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers — but the plot, characters and text are entirely our own creation. All characters and events in this story are fictional. No affiliation, endorsement, or official connection is implied.

💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS
A reflection in a dark window, a bell above a door, and a witness who was perfectly sure of what he saw. Would you have trusted your own memory — and when did you first doubt it? 🕵️
