Dublin, October 1929. Smoke hanging above the roofs again, leaves thinning on the Green, and in a tall house in Mount Street, a charity reception in aid of winter boots for boys starting their apprenticeships.
Captain Arthur has come with Anne Foster, his partner in the agency and his fiancée, and with the formidable Lady Eleanor. He has forgotten the subscription. He has been warned that at good causes, a detective is seldom allowed to remain a guest.
The guest of honour is Mr Charles Ellison: retired printer, generous committee man, a gentleman who remembers the names of the boys he has helped. He gives a short, good speech. Then he mentions, quietly, that a former employee with an old grievance may call later, and that he will deal with it downstairs.
An hour later the Captain steps out onto a dark terrace for a breath of air — and through a lighted study window, he watches that respected gentleman bring a heavy candlestick down on another man's head.
Ellison does not deny the blow. He says he was attacked first, with a piece of broken glass. And the Captain, who saw everything through that window, did not see quite everything.
With the wedding set for the eighth of February, the Captain and Anne must separate what one honest witness saw from what a very reasonable man would like him to believe.
ℹ️ FOR LISTENERS This is an original mystery written by Nocturnal Tales, inspired by the spirit of the great Golden Age crime writers — but the plot, characters and text are entirely our own creation. 💬 QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS The Captain saw the blow with his own eyes — and the whole case turned on what he couldn't see. When did you first stop believing Ellison's account? 🕵️
