He went into acting not because he wanted to perform but because it was the only space that let him explore without judgment. He studied psychology at the Ivy League level, went to therapy every week, and slowly pieced together what it actually meant to be himself. In this episode we cover:
- What it really means to feel other as a man
- Why the religious shame so many men carry is actually a rebellion against interpretation and not belief
- How acting teaches you to see your feelings as information rather than identity
- What David's one year old son River is teaching him about self acceptance
- Why most parents are unconsciously parenting from their own discomfort
- How the body rehearses anxiety the same way an actor rehearses a character
- The inside out versus outside in approach to regulating your nervous system
- The improv rule that will change how you show up in every relationship
- Why the most liberating thing a man can hear is that there is nothing to fix.Chapters:03:00 to 07:20 He spent his whole life feeling different07:20 to 13:56 The shame his church gave him 13:56 to 20:16 He used acting to escape. 20:16 to 28:00 Jacob wrestled God and broke his hip...28:00 to 35:00 His one year old son is healing something in him35:00 to 44:38 Your parents were parenting their own discomfort not yours44:38 to 57:00 Are you actually anxious or have you just rehearsed it?57:00 to 01:04:00 What your voice is telling you about your nervous system01:04:00 to 01:21:00 Being called feminine as a boy 01:21:00 to 01:46:00 The one improv rule that will change every relationship you have01:46:00 to 01:52:43 What David would say to his son if he had 60 secondsThis one goes somewhere most conversations never reach.Follow David: https://www.instagram.com/sicilianod/Follow the podcast: https://www.instagram.com/youchoosepodcast/Follow Billy: https://www.instagram.com/billygartonjr_/
