In this episode of Parenting on the Front Lines, we continue our series on postmodernism and examine how different philosophical ideas have influenced the culture our children are growing up in.

We take a closer look at Karl Marx, Marxism, Critical Race Theory, and gender ideology, exploring the common philosophical thread that runs through these ideas: the question of whether truth comes from an objective source outside of ourselves or whether individuals and groups create their own meaning, identity, and truth.

The conversation examines:

• Karl Marx and the idea of religion as the “opiate of the masses” • The historical connection between Marxism, communism, and atheism • How Marxist ideas have influenced modern cultural movements • Critical Race Theory and the emphasis on oppressor and oppressed groups • The importance of personal responsibility and how victimhood can shape cultural thinking • How Christian students may encounter competing worldviews in college • Gender ideology and the question of objective truth • Why parents should teach their children why they believe what they believe • The importance of grounding our understanding of identity, purpose, and truth in Scripture

Rather than simply telling our children what to reject, we discuss the importance of giving them a biblical foundation for understanding truth, identity, purpose, and the world around them.

As parents, we need to prepare our children to recognize the ideas they will encounter in classrooms, entertainment, social media, and culture—and to evaluate those ideas through a biblical worldview.

This is part of our ongoing series examining the philosophical ideas shaping our culture. Next episode: Nietzsche and the meaning behind the phrase “God is dead.”

Parenting on the Front Lines seeks to equip and encourage parents to raise their children biblically in a hostile culture.
