We often think of our culture, laws, and political beliefs as independent choices that we make. However, historical materialism suggests that these intellectual structures are actually determined by the material and technological foundations of our era. This tension raises the question of whether we are truly free actors or merely products of our economic systems.

In this episode, we explore the developmental trajectory of human civilizations through the lens of productive relations. We discuss how human labor and technological tools form an economic base that directly shapes our laws, philosophy, and everyday cultural institutions. We trace how societies transition through distinct historical stages—from classical slavery to medieval feudalism, and ultimately to the highly dynamic system of modern industrial capitalism.

It is worth noting that Friedrich Engels was a critical co-developer of this project, contributing much of the rich historical detail that made their joint analyses accurate.

If our legal and cultural institutions exist primarily to protect our current economic structure, what would a society look like without economic classes?
