As climate change and declining fish catches force fishermen into deeper waters, coastal women are increasingly left behind. This shift deepens gender inequality because women lack the capital needed to access deep-sea resources.

In this episode, we explore how the Blue Empowerment Project is challenging this imbalance on the Kenyan coast. By utilizing the Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture framework, partners like Kenyatta University and the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute are helping women transition from bystanders to owners of successful marine farms. We discuss the practical science of seaweed harvesting, the logistics of fingerling transport, and the profound social change that occurs when women gain the confidence to express themselves.

A key contextual highlight of this initiative is its direct collaboration with county-level fisheries departments, which has allowed women to secure formal fishing licenses and voice their needs directly to the Council of Governors.

What shifts in our funding structures are required to prioritize hands-on, community-led technology over purely academic research?
