Quince travels to Cheyenne to collect Army equipment and escort two new recruits back to Fort Laramie. One is a former Confederate prisoner of war who has enlisted in Union service—a “galvanized Yankee”—bringing old loyalties and distrust into the demanding world of frontier cavalry duty.
