This children’s book by Mercer Mayer illustrates the experiences of Little Critter as he stays home with a babysitter. While the protagonist describes himself as a helpful and well-behaved assistant, the visual illustrations humorously depict a series of clumsy accidents and chaotic chores. Throughout the evening, the characters engage in routine activities such as eating dinner, bathing, and playing games, often resulting in a significant mess. Despite the constant disasters occurring in every room, the main character remains convinced he is being perfectly helpful. By the time his parents return, the exhausted sitter has fallen asleep on the sofa after a very long night. The story highlights the gap between a child's good intentions and the reality of their boisterous behavior.
