What makes a human being different from an artificial intelligence?

As AI systems become increasingly sophisticated, they can write, reason, create images, solve problems, code, and sustain remarkably convincing conversations. But does impressive performance amount to genuine understanding? Could a machine ever become conscious—or even become a person?

In this episode of The Prometheans, I speak with philosopher Dr. Mihretu P. Guta about consciousness, artificial intelligence, personhood, the soul, and the future of humanity.

Dr. Guta is Associate Professor of Philosophy and Apologetics at Biola University. His research focuses on metaphysics and the philosophy of mind, with further interests in philosophy of religion, cognitive neuroscience, philosophical theology, and the nature of consciousness. His academic work has engaged questions surrounding the first-person perspective, the self, the metaphysics of consciousness, substance dualism, and strong artificial intelligence.

We discuss:

• Has ChatGPT changed the philosophical debate about AI consciousness?

• What is the difference between weak AI and strong AI?

• Can a machine genuinely understand—or merely simulate understanding?

• What is a “bearer” of consciousness?

• Could consciousness ever emerge from sufficiently complex computation?

• What does John Searle’s Chinese Room argument tell us about AI and understanding?

• If human beings possess an immaterial soul, how could the soul interact with the physical brain?

• What does AI reveal about the nature of human personhood?

• Could machines ever become conscious persons?

• How should humanity use AI without losing the capacities that make human life meaningful?

This is a conversation about one of the deepest questions of our technological age:

If a machine can think like us, speak like us, create like us, and perhaps even appear to understand us—what, ultimately, makes us human?
