Srimad Bhaagwat - Skandh 4 (Part 3)
In this episode of Srimad Bhaagwat Mahapuran, we enter one of the most powerful and emotionally charged stories of Skandh 4—the conflict between Daksha Prajapati and Lord Shiva, and the profound devotion of Mata Sati.
The episode begins with the relationship between Daksha and Shiva. During a grand gathering of sages and divine beings, Daksha becomes offended when Lord Shiva does not rise to greet him. Driven by pride and resentment, Daksha openly criticizes and insults Shiva. Yet Mahadev remains completely शांत and unmoved, demonstrating an extraordinary quality of spiritual greatness—the ability to remain silent and composed even when insulted.
This episode explores an important spiritual teaching: the ability to tolerate criticism and remain peaceful despite having the power to retaliate is a sign of true strength. The narration reminds us that anger, jealousy, and hostility can corrupt even apparently righteous actions and turn dharma into adharma.
The conflict deepens when Daksha decides to perform a grand yajna at Kankhal, deliberately excluding Lord Shiva. When Sati learns that her father is conducting the yajna without inviting her or Shiva, she becomes eager to visit her parental home. Lord Shiva lovingly warns her that going to a place where one's husband is being insulted will only bring sorrow and humiliation. Yet Sati, overcome by her desire to meet her family, chooses to go.
At Daksha's yajna, Sati discovers that Shiva has been deliberately denied his share and even a seat at the sacred gathering. While Sati can tolerate the insult directed toward herself, she cannot bear the disrespect shown toward her husband. Her grief and righteous anguish become overwhelming.
In a deeply moving final act, Sati declares that she cannot continue living in the body that has become associated with this insult and with her disobedience to Shiva. She turns inward, fixes her mind upon Mahadev, and through yogic concentration leaves her mortal body, merging her consciousness with Shiva.
This episode carries profound lessons on ego, jealousy, tolerance, devotion, dharma, and the consequences of harboring ill will. It also reminds us that true spirituality lies not merely in rituals and outward religious practices, but in the purity of our heart and the feelings with which those actions are performed.
Presented in easy-to-understand Hindi, this episode makes the deeper spiritual meaning of the story accessible to modern listeners while preserving its emotional and devotional essence.
May Bhagwan help us cultivate humility, pure intentions, tolerance, and devotion in our own lives.
