Most dog training does not fail because the dog forgot what they learned or because the training method suddenly stopped working. It fails because the consistency that created the behavior slowly disappears. In this episode, we break down why completing puppy classes, private lessons, or even an intensive training program is only the beginning. Dogs continue learning every day, and every interaction teaches them something. When pulling starts getting them where they want to go, commands get repeated without follow-through, or yesterday's boundaries disappear today, those small inconsistencies eventually become new habits.
We also tackle what follow-through actually means and why it should not be confused with being harsh or controlling. Clear communication means that when you give a command your dog already understands, you calmly ensure that the expectation is completed. Saying "Come" five times, allowing a dog to break Place whenever they choose, or enforcing rules only when it is convenient teaches the dog that your words are negotiable. We discuss how inconsistent expectations between family members compound the problem and why owners should look at their own habits before assuming their dog's training has somehow disappeared.
Finally, we explain how to make training sustainable enough to survive real life. Maintaining a well-trained dog should not require hours of formal obedience work every day. Instead, we show you how to integrate training into routines you already have, including walks, meals, doorways, backyard time, guests, and relaxing around the house. A few intentional minutes practiced consistently can preserve behaviors far better than occasional marathon training sessions. If your dog's obedience has slowly started slipping, this episode challenges you to stop searching for the next technique and ask a more useful question: What have I stopped following through on?
