Russia Denies Plague—But I’m Worried About Something Else

I examine the unverified reports surrounding a possible pneumonic plague incident linked to Russia’s Siberian Anti-Plague Institute, including the U.S. Embassy warning, Russian official denials, and the World Health Organization’s statement that it had recorded no cases. The key question is not whether to leap to claims of a bioweapon or a confirmed outbreak. It is whether Russian authorities would provide timely, credible information if a serious laboratory or public-health failure occurred.

I also explain why pneumonic plague is distinct from bubonic plague: it is bacterial, severe, and requires rapid treatment, but it is not COVID-like in its ease of spread. On the 20th anniversary of Anna Politkovskaya’s murder, I connect the transparency question to her critique of Putin’s political culture, Russia’s treatment of journalists, and the incentives authoritarian systems can create to conceal bad news. In a real health emergency, trust and openness are strategic assets—not optional extras.
