Trump Lifts Sanctions on Russian Diesel—But There’s a Catch

Donald Trump says Russia will supply diesel to U.S. and global markets following a discussion with Vladimir Putin, raising immediate questions about sanctions enforcement, Russian refinery capacity, and the war in Ukraine. I examine the reported volumes, why their effect on U.S. diesel prices may be limited, and why any sanctions relief before Russia leaves Ukraine carries serious strategic costs.

I also assess Volodymyr Zelensky’s challenge to Marco Rubio’s “stalemate” framing: Ukraine argues that stronger pressure on Russia, including sanctions, weapons restrictions, and air-defense support, can change Putin’s calculations. We look at reported U.S.-Russia discussions involving Nord Stream and European gas, NATO’s Steadfast Noon exercise, Germany’s support for Ukrainian air defense, and the central question for American leadership: whether economic deals advance a durable peace or reduce the leverage needed to secure one.
