Why are Puerto Ricans called “ungrateful” for questioning their island’s relationship with the United States? And why do some commentators confuse independence or autonomy with Spain with communism?
In this episode of Puerto Rico Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz addresses those accusations and examines the history behind Puerto Rico’s demand for change from the Charter of Autonomy of 1897 to the invasion of 1898, fifty years of appointed governors, the Ponce Massacre, political repression, contraceptive trials involving Puerto Rican women, military herbicide testing, and today’s federal oversight under PROMESA.
We invite our fellow Hispanics, including Cuban content creators who make these judgments, to understand Puerto Rico’s history before condemning its people’s political aspirations.
Recognizing opportunities associated with American citizenship does not require silence about inequality. Peacefully advocating a different political future is a democratic right.
