Broken Promises: Washington Questions Spain While Indigenous Nations Still Wait for Justice at Home

In this episode of Puerto Rico: Open Your Eyes, Edwin Ortiz, President of The National Puerto Rico & Spain Initiative, examines the contrast between U.S. congressional language concerning Spain’s autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla and America’s unresolved responsibilities toward Indigenous nations at home.

Drawing on court decisions, government oversight reports, and Indigenous voting-rights research, this episode explores the taking of treaty-protected Sioux lands, inadequate access to safe water, the Navajo Nation’s water dispute, barriers facing Native voters, and healthcare staffing shortages.

Following our episode on Mexico, Spain, and Indigenous rights in Latin America, we ask the same question of Washington: Are the principles invoked abroad being upheld at home?

Listen, share, and join the conversation. Justice loses its credibility when it is applied selectively.
