Modern English Reclaims Its Post-Punk Fire, Sex Pistols’ Paul Cook Rebuilds The Professionals, and Punk Grows Old Disgracefully

Modern English frontman Robbie Grey talks with Kyle Meredith about reuniting the band’s original lineup for 2017’s Take Me to the Trees , recapturing the fire of Mesh & Lace and After the Snow , and writing “You’re Corrupt” amid Trump, Brexit, and widening inequality. Then Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook takes the focus as he and Tom Spencer discuss rebuilding The Professionals without Steve Jones, creating a more contemporary version of the band’s poppy punk sound, and calling in famous friends to complete the album. Cook also looks back at the chaos surrounding the original Professionals and what it meant to keep that punk energy alive while “growing old disgracefully,” years before the band ultimately called it a day in 2024.
