A 12-year-old Florida boy, Cristian Fernandez, stands accused of murdering his 2-year-old half-brother and sexually abusing another sibling. Raised in a life marked by neglect, abuse, and early trauma, including being found naked and wandering as a toddler, Fernandez’s early years were anything but stable. During questioning, he denied intent to kill, citing “flashbacks” of past abuse by his stepfather as a trigger for his violent behavior. His defense argues his youth prevented him from fully understanding his legal rights; a judge later ruled his interrogation statements inadmissible on those grounds. Couch Detectives dives into every piece of the interrogation and records to ask: Was this tragedy preventable? What role did trauma play? And how far can the justice system go when the suspect is a child?
