To make the electric transition viable, Volkswagen had to overcome a significant engineering hurdle: the "Weight vs. License" dilemma. In the European market, a standard Class B license limits vehicle weight to 3.5 tons. Because high-capacity EV batteries are heavy, traditional fixed wooden furniture would push the vehicle toward a 3-ton base weight, leaving an insufficient payload for passengers and gear.
