The Partnership & Instant Success: Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has partnered with the Chinese automotive group Chery to revive the iconic Freelander nameplate as a contemporary, electrified SUV brand, starting with the Freelander 8. The vehicle made a spectacular debut in China, securing 10,000 pre-orders in just 48 hours. While JLR oversees styling and brand identity, Chery provides the technical architecture in a joint venture strategy resembling the Mercedes-Geely partnership for Smart.

Dimensions & Design: The Freelander 8 is a massive, boxy SUV measuring 5.12 meters in length, 2.05 meters in width, and 1.93 meters in height, with a 3.04-meter wheelbase. Its vertical front end and clean surfaces explicitly recall classic Land Rover styling, even though it does not officially carry the Land Rover badge.

Performance & Platform: Built on the new 800-volt iMax platform (supporting electric, plug-in hybrid, and range-extender powertrains), the SUV is powered by a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine (156 hp) paired with two electric motors and a 60.3 kWh CATL battery. Together, the system delivers an impressive 829 horsepower, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, with an electric range of approximately 300 km.

State-of-the-Art Technology: Inside, the minimalist cabin features a massive 46.3-inch 8K panoramic display spanning nearly 1.2 meters, complemented by a 15.6-inch central screen. The infotainment system is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8397 processor, while driver assistance is managed by the Huawei Qiankun ADS 5 platform.

Global Strategy & Pricing: The Freelander 8 is the first step in an ambitious five-year plan to launch six different models across 90 countries through 1,100 points of sale. Following its Chinese debut, the brand will target the Middle East, with an European launch expected between 2027 and 2028 (featuring more compact models). In China, the SUV starts at 339,900 yuan (about €43,000), which is projected to reach €45,000 to €50,000 in Europe due to transport, local taxes, and homologation costs.
