In this episode of
Unexplained History, host
Tom McKenzie investigates the fascinating, ink-stained history of one of America’s most famous cryptids. Far from starting with a supernatural curse in the woods, the legend of the Jersey Devil was forged through the rivalries and reputations of early American print culture.
The journey begins in 1687 in
Burlington, New Jersey, where a Quaker surveyor named
Daniel Leeds published an almanac that sparked a fierce religious and social feud. McKenzie explains how this local dispute, combined with the power of the colonial press, began the process of synonymous branding that linked the Leeds family name to the "devil" himself. The episode further explores the high-profile 18th-century rivalry between the Leeds family and
Benjamin Franklin, who used his satirical wit and widespread media reach to mock the Leeds reputation and solidify the family's "monstrous" identity in the public eye.
The narrative then leaps to January 1909, a week of mass hysteria where mysterious hoofprints appeared on rooftops and across frozen fields throughout the
Delaware Valley. McKenzie deconstructs the media's role in this panic, highlighting how rival newspapers and dime-museum promoters like
Norman Jeffries manufactured hoaxes and "captured" specimens to drive sales and ticket revenue. By utilizing records from the
New Jersey State Archives and research from
Rutgers University, this episode examines the measurable anomalies and the manufactured hype that turned a family's political fallout into an enduring national legend.
