"Backwater," the second volume of Dorothy Richardson's groundbreaking "Pilgrimage" series, follows the introspective journey of Miriam Henderson as she navigates her teaching role at a girls' school in North London. Grappling with societal expectations surrounding marriage, religion, and family, Miriam embodies the struggle for personal authenticity and the quest for happiness in a constraining world. Richardson's innovative use of "interior monologue" captures the complexities of female experience, making her work not only a pivotal moment in literary history but also a timeless exploration of identity and self-discovery.
