"Backwater" is the second volume of Dorothy Richardson's groundbreaking "Pilgrimage" series, which explores the life of Miriam Henderson, a character inspired by the author's own experiences. Set against the backdrop of a girls' school in North London, Miriam grapples with the constraints of societal expectations, reflecting on themes such as marriage, religion, and the quest for happiness. Richardson's innovative use of "interior monologue" captures the complexity of female experience, making her work a significant contribution to feminist literature. The struggles and introspections of Miriam resonate today, inviting listeners to consider the ongoing relevance of personal identity and the search for authenticity in a conformist world.
